OUR MISSION
Our Place, DC (Our Place) is a unique non-profit organization in the District of Columbia (DC) dedicated to providing gender-specific direct services and advocacy to help formerly and currently incarcerated women come back home from prison. We operate with a mission to support women who are or have been in the criminal justice system by providing the resources they need to maintain connections with the community, resettle after incarceration, and reconcile with their families. Our Place helps women remain drug and alcohol free, obtain decent housing and jobs, gain access to education, secure resources for their children, and maintain physical and emotional health with a goal of helping women succeed in the community rather than engage in behaviors that result in re-arrest.

Our Place began 10 years ago in response the stories women shared about their experiences in prison and in the community after their release, which essentially described a lack of opportunities.

Governor Tim Kaine Visits Our Place

Governor Kaine visited the drop-in center, learned about Our Place programs the serve women returning to DC from prison and jail, and spoke with clients, board members and staff.
Governor Kaine made the visit to reconnect with Ollin Crawford, the case manager of Camille’s Place, an Our Place project, who Kaine pardoned during his governorship.
Kaine wanted to visit the place that Ollin had described as central to her recovery from incarceration and reentry to the community.
On Saturday, February 26, Our Place, DC attended the Oedipus Rey show at The Wooly Mammoth Theater.

Luis Alfaro’s Oedipus el Rey is a contemporary “cautionary tale” that poses powerful questions about recidivism, re-entry, belonging, loyalty, and the tangled personal, societal, and political cycles that seem to drive our fates. Throughout the run, Woolly Mammoth’s dramaturgical and connectivity staff is exploring the local impact of these issues by providing audiences with a variety of perspectives into the world of the play. Following the performance, Executive Director Ashley McSwain participated in a discussion with other community groups about recidivism.

2011 JINGLE JAMMIES
Children's Holiday Party
![]()
The 2011 December holiday season presents the occasion to spread good cheer, spend time with family and share, care and give to those less fortunate than ourselves! While for many people this is how the holidays are spent, we’d like you to take a moment to think about a very special population of children who face a very different holiday reality – children of incarcerated women. Each year our holiday event has an educational theme. This year our theme is “Jingle Jammies.” Research shows that children whose parents are incarcerated do not sleep in pajama’s and often do not enjoy the tradition of bedtime stories. We are encouraging nighttime reading as children settle in their new pajamas and go to sleep with pleasant dreams. Our hope is that by creating new joyful memories they can start the new year with a new perspective!
Our Place DC kindly requests your support in providing a new tradition by supporting these children who otherwise may not receive a single gift.
